The Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir, the moniker meaning "Black Blood," is the latest special edition model from legendary Italian supercar builder Bugatti. Only 15 units of the Sang Noir will be produced, and Bugatti is giving United States residents first crack.

The Veyron Sang Noir, like the "standard" Bugatti Veyron 16.4, features a W16 motor and four turbochargers. Think of two twin-turbo eights smashed together. Offering the most stock horsepower of any production car in history at 1001 horsepower, the Veyron 16.4 can launch its way to 60 mph from a standing start in 2.5 seconds.

The Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir specifications are the same as the first edition of the fastest Italian sports car in history. The Veyron Sang Noir still offers enough torque to pull a Ferrari dealership off its foundation, and will run a quarter mile time of 10.2 seconds.

The changes to the super-exclusive Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir edition are in the exterior and interior styling departments. The Sang Noir exterior is finished in piano black and chrome, causing the car to look smaller and leaner than the standard Veyron 16.4, even though the dimensions are the same.

The Sang Noir's mirrors, grill, badging, exhaust tip and grill all receive a brushed chrome treatment. The eye naturally traces a chrome-accented line down the Veyron Sang Noir's greenhouse, a flashy feature that serves to separate the carbon fiber section running down the center of this instant-classic Italian sports car.

Even the carbon fiber on the Veyron Sang Noir is separated from anything else in the automotive world by a high-gloss finish that maintains the two-tone look the Bugatti Veyron line is famous for. Standing out with a finish that could be called "piano black," the carbon accents allow the Sang Noir to catch the light and further accentuate the contours in a sports car body that has been called the most beautiful in history by some, and bulbous and ugly by its critics.

The interior follows the Bugatti tradition and looks sumptuous and classy without being overstated. The Veyron Sang Noir's leather and carpeting are done in a color that could be called pumpkin tan-orange, and yet fits the total styling package perfectly. Think of the Sang Noir as a Halloween costume for society's affluent upper crust.

The soft leather covers every available interior surface, and is accented by more bits of chrome with a soft brushed, yet still shining look. Not that a Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir's occupants will spend much time feeling comfortable and coddled in this interior. The Sang Noir is meant to be driven hard, and Bugatti has taken great pains with every Veyron to ensure the driver be as safe as possible at all times. With 10 radiators and a complicated roll cage system, any tragic accident occurring in a Veyron is likely to be the fault of the driver, rather than that of the supercar.

Bugatti is seeking wealthy and respected United States residents to own a piece of automotive history in the exclusive Veyron Sang Noir edition. No word on whether the 15 units are accounted for, but needless to say, pricing will be significantly more than the approximately $1.5 million the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 commands.

The Veyron Sang Noir is designed to call to mind one of the most beautiful and revered sports cars of all time, the Bugatti Type 57C Atlantique, of which only 3 production versions were ever released. One of the two surviving Bugatti Type 57C Atlantique examples is owned by Ralph Lauren. A Bugatti Type 57 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1937, and again in 1939.

The Italian supercar manufacturer has promised that only 300 examples of the Veyron, in all its editions, will be produced. The 15 Sang Noir models are offered first to United States residents, after Bugatti gave Europeans the first crack at the Veyron 16.4 Pur Sang edition several months ago.

The Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir is another example of how an engineer's dream can come together with fine art. 253 mph has never been so beautiful.

As if the Bugatti Veyron supercar wasn't enough, Bugatti has gone and released three special edition Veyrons to date, of which the Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermes could be called the most luxurious. Not that the standard Veyron, an Italian sports car costing nearly 2 million dollars if you can convince the most exclusive brand in sports cars that you are worthy, could not be called the ultimate luxury in itself.

With hand-cut and stitched leather all around, and a subdued yet beautiful brown and tan color scheme, the Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermes, released to select buyers earlier in 2008, again pairs an Italian halo sports car maker with a designer halo clothing line maker, to deliciously excessive automotive results. The Veyron Fbg par Hermes has slightly revised bodywork from other Bugatti Veyron models, but the real fancy treatment comes inside.

Take a look through this whimsical release from Bugati Automobiles, where the Fbr par Hermes is described in narrative form through the perspective of one of the few buyers worldwide cursed with wealth enough to get their hands on one.

"Speed is subsumed. Speed becomes a quiet child. She, too, sits curled on your knees. Her mechanistic posturing, her screeching, her technological power, her whinnying cries are left outside."

..only from the Italians.

NOT SO FAST!

[Courtesy Bugatti Press Release]

One touch is all it takes. A single, light touch on the ignition key. And your world falls away. Suddenly, with intense fury, exquisite delight. There's no going back. You have slipped into the cockpit of the Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermès, like slipping on a motorbike helmet, a dinner suit. Impossible to backtrack. And what would be the point? Back there is the last century. The rear wing rises in your farewell salute. The new century is here, nestling in your lap. A thunderbolt. It could seem frightening; in fact it's merely awe-inspiring. It should feel devastating; in reality it's simply sensational. You're projected, in space and time. Even your words ball up... disassembled and reconstructed like a Cubist collage. Not mere onomatopoeia, but impressions, ellipses.

Your box of expressions just ran out of exclamation marks. Rushing, compressing. The land-scape is folded differently. Trees no longer stand straight. Faces are blurred. You're sitting inside a glass marble. Passers-by turn their heads like a crowd at a tennis match, watching the strange spectacle of speed. And while a thousand-and-one horses lather beneath the hood, your wheels have attained that dreamlike state of grace, turning backwards, slowly, or so it seems.

And so the Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermès demands acquiescence to the rhythm of this curious tango, propelling you into a parallel world of carbon fibre and aluminium, while at the same time holding you back. Above all, you are mesmerised by this sense of speed, no longer proud and wild, but tamed by the mere touch of the bodywork. Has speed found a sister, an accom-plice? Suddenly, it seems, speed dives into the cockpit, casts off her warlike countenance, confers her favour upon your mount, arrays herself in its colour, the colour that extends throughout, even to the nape of your neck. The sensation is so extraordinary that even the engine's noise takes on the quality of sound.

Speed is subsumed. Speed becomes a quiet child. She, too, sits curled on your knees. Her mechanistic posturing, her screeching, her technological power, her whinnying cries are left outside. Fine things in themselves, no doubt. But the hood was put there for a reason: the mechanics of speed should stay hidden, gone to ground, the better to concentrate their strength.

In Hermès's Faubourg workshops you'll hear it said that speed is no longer merely a skill, but a natural state: taming, accessorising, softening the pure-blood mettle of horses and racing cars alike. Drawing them to us, our companions and accomplices in exhilaration, harnessed but unbowed.

Put an ear to the heartbeat of the Faubourg house, and you're sure to catch these pleasing strains. This singular pact with the gods. Speed is no longer an end in itself. We want from it that which remains unspoken, the secret of speed: the slow-moving eye at the heart of the storm. Like the tenor's silence, the writer's blank page.

The Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermès is a creature of paradox. No sooner has it bolted like a zebra, than it slows to a halt at the first zebra crossing. A strange feeling steals over you in time.

A sense of a different order of things. Speed has set out to prove her worth, her ability to devour distances, to tear through the kilometres and toss them behind. Now, she invites a more intimate knowledge, posing, turning, arching at the touch of your hand. Speed often likes to preach by the opposite example. Like a saddle-stitcher crafting an eagerly-awaited order, she'll keep you waiting expectantly, taking things slowly, the better to fly forth when the moment comes. Like fiery horses that toss their heads and paw the ground, then race to the horizon. Speed is the daughter of impatience.

This is precisely where Hermès felt it had a call to answer. What have signature silks and smooth canvas got to do with engine cylinders and lubricants? With quiet assurance, Hermès brings its own special contribution to the mix - that most troubling, rare and precious ingredient, emotion.

But where does it come from? The accelerator pedal, no doubt - the pedal you have just released. And yet emotion is also born of a remarkable, densely woven fabric of complicity and understanding. Notice the slow, unhurried gestures of your hands - are these not the gestures of the craftworkers of the house of Hermès? How many hours of loving work have gone into the steering wheel alone, wholly sheathed in tow-coloured leather? Unhurried application, taking the time it takes. See these people at work, passing a hand over the surface of the leather, feeling the quality of the air between the fingertips and grain. Then massaging it, working its substance. Humming quietly, sometimes, under their breath.

This car, seemingly sprung from nowhere - part super-hero roadster, part rounded beach pebble - has a long history. Now Hermès and designer Gabriele Pezzini have taken it by surprise, giving it a new line, new gestures: smoothing the shell and cockpit, relaxing the driver's seat, softening the doors and the steering wheel, "branding" the radiator grilles. The virile racer becomes the perfect gentleman, fast-moving yet calm and composed.

But this car's greatest strength is its ability to make you feel like a child again (a somewhat boisterous child, admittedly). Its thrilling growl brings a smile to the lips. Better still, its irruption brings with it your unforced "Ah!" of amazement, a new poetics of surprise.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, the exciting new holder of the title of world's fastest roadster, has made its exciting debut at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. While other supercar-level convertible models such as the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster go with a "true convertible" design with a fully stowable roof, the Bugatti goes a different route.

The Veyron Grand Sport offers open top motoring at the supercar level, though it is not a true convertible model. Bugatti determined that releasing a Veyron convertible would not provide the safety at high speed the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is known for, so they opted for a Targa model in the Grand Sport, with a removable polycarbonate roof.

The Grand Sport roadster model is not simply a chop job on a standard Bugatti Veyron 16.4. Bugatti has taken great pains to ensure the structural rigidity of the Grand Sport, making changes throughout the canopy and adding structural enhancements for both stability at speed and safety in the event of a crash. The front windshield is taller with a more upright look, and carbon fiber longitudinal beams and other structural enhancements protect the occupants and the Veyron Grand Sport's sheer speed capabilities.

And fast the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport is. An advantage to going with the targa top is that Bugatti has tuned the Grand Sport to maintain the hard top Veyron 16.4's top speed of 253 mph when the roof is in place, with the top speed dropping to a still-ridiculous 223.7 mph! Imagine the wind blowing your face off at speeds like this, and you can get a feel for why the Veyron Grand Sport should be as exciting as any convertible or other roadster model on the market.

The Veyron Grand Sport base price? A cool 1.4 million Euros, if you can find one. Production will be limited to just 150 units, with 50 earmarked for current Bugatti customers who feel the need to own two Veyrons. Read on for all the details, directly from the technological wizards at Bugatti...

New Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport to be unveiled on 16 August 2008 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

Official Bugatti Automobiles, S.A.S. Press Release

Molsheim/Pebble Beach, August 16, 2008 - The world's most significant celebration of the automobile takes place annually in Monterey, California. This year, it will see some of the most elegant, exclusive, and valuable vehicles ever produced in over 100 years of motoring, with Bugatti set to play a prominent role. On the evening prior to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the highlight of the event, the marque renowned for impeccable automotive solutions, aesthetics and driving dynamics will unveil a second model to the world - the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport with a unique removable roof.

In response to customer demand, significant modifications have been made to the vehicle's complex structure to make possible open-top driving, thereby adding a new dimension to this high-performance sports car. Incorporating a host of new and innovative safety and equipment features, it is the world's fastest and most exciting roadster. It is immediately recognizable as a result of its slightly higher windscreen, stylized daytime running lights, and lightweight, transparent polycarbonate roof.

The main challenge in developing the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport with removable roof resulted from the unique structure of the fixed-roof Bugatti Veyron. An optimum combination of rigidity and lightweight engineering ensures the monocoque passenger cell of the original model is extremely strong while weighing an absolute minimum - it is a central element of the vehicle's structure. As the roof is an integral part of this, removing it meant the load paths had to be completely redesigned to maintain the vehicle's rigidity and crash safety, and to offer additional protection from side impacts and rolling.

As a result, the monocoque structure has been reinforced around the side skirts and the transmission tunnel. The B-pillars have been cross-stiffened using a carbon fibre support, and a central carbon plate has been positioned beneath the transmission tunnel to ensure the vehicle suffers from less torsional flexing than any other roadster.

The doors of the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport are made of carbon fibre, and house an integrated longitudinal beam.

In the event of an accident, this transfers the load from the A to the B-pillar, thereby dissipating impact energy. Furthermore, the two redesigned air intakes for the 16-cylinder mid-engine now feature 10-centimetre wide carbon-fibre elements to offer protection should the car roll.

Along with moisture-resistant, backstitched leather, a range of new equipment features has been added to the interior, including a reversing camera with 2.7-inch monitor in the rear-view-mirror, and the "Puccini" sound system with digital signal processor.

When the roof is closed, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport can reach 407 km/h, while speeds of up to 360 km/h are possible with roof off. Should it rain, an innovative folding roof stored in the luggage compartment can be opened up like an umbrella at any time. When this folding roof is in place, the car can travel at up to 130 km/h.

Assembled by hand at the company's headquarters in Molsheim, Alsace, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport will be available from March 2009 at the price of 1.4 million euros (excluding tax). Just 150 examples will be made, with the first 50 of these going exclusively to registered Bugatti customers. The first vehicle is certain to be highly sought after, and Bugatti has taken the decision to donate this specific car to charity. It will be sold to the highest bidder at the Pebble Beach Auction presented by Gooding & Company.

2008 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Pur Sang Edition Specifications

The Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 “Pur Sang” Edition

Visitors to the Atelier in Molsheim are always intrigued to see the Bugatti Veyron's high-tech components being meticulously assembled into an automotive work of art. Watching the car coming together, coupled with an admiration for the technical beauty of its structure, gave the designers the idea of finishing the car in its pure material configuration - meaning no color coating. The result is the EB 16.4. Veyron "Pur Sang", a two-tone study of pure materialness showing the car's true essentials: carbon and aluminum.

The carbon monocoque holds the engine plus the passenger cell, while the polished aluminum panelling is enhanced by reflections in the sculpted bodywork. Interestingly, the rawness of the materials even more strongly highlights the dual character of this car: performance power coupled with cruising comfort, structure and body, dark and light.

A closer look at the details reveals the technical logic behind this stylistic appearance. The sophisticated monocoque contains all the core structural components, including the W16 engine, the passenger cell, the crash box and the linkages to the wheels. It is this purpose-driven fundament that is visible as the center of the car in clear-coated carbon fiber.

Equally consistent is the use of the aluminum paneling. This lends shape and a unique body sculpture to the car, covering the wheels in a muscular and powerful expression by way of elaborately shaped fenders. Highly polished, these perfectly tensioned shapes strongly visualize the fascinating surface reflections that define every Veyron.

The balanced graphic appearance is also visible when looking down onto the car from above. These qualities take on a distinct appearance - almost like that found in a Mondrian painting. As its pur sang label suggests, this individualized customer car shares the same kind of DNA as that of classic cars from the Bugatti past: the "Atalante", the Type 55, the Type 41 "Royal" all had an unmistakable and characteristic graphic signature. It is this precise division of performance components and body paneling - in this form - that makes the EB 16.4. Veyron "Pur Sang" unique in the supercar world.

2006 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Specifications

Bugatti Veyron 16.4: Superior in Every Sense

After four years of development, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, as it will now be called, is ready for series production. The most exclusive sports car of all time is following in the footsteps of the legendary Bugatti, those universally-coveted limousines and unbeatable racing cars of the 1920s and 1930s which today are among the most sought-after creations from the early days of automobile construction.

This brings to an end the era of design models and concept cars which since the late 1990s have signposted possible paths to the Bugattis of the future. Design and technological concept have finally become reality in the Veyron model's final form and will be available from the beginning of 2004 as a strictly limited edition of just 300 cars. Technologically futuristic and packed with creative engineering, the first Bugatti of the 21st century has arrived.

Merging the Past and the Future

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4's home is in Molsheim-Dorlisheim, the French town where, almost 100 years ago, Ettore Bugatti began to realize his lifelong dream of being a car manufacturer. The new workshop is not just where the engine and vehicle are assembled and tested, it is also the place where customers collect their Bugattis and drive them out onto the streets for the first time.

The aim is to turn Molsheim into an all-round Bugatti center once again. While up to 70 new vehicles a year are built by hand in the new facility, neighboring specially-equipped workshops are the scene of expert restoration work on historic Bugatti vehicles. Both past and future have found a new home here.

High Performance

The car's safety systems have been designed to cope with its extraordinary performance, acceleration and speed. The single-piece carbon-fiber monocoque alone scores maximum points in crash tests, while airbags give the driver and passenger additional protection. The high-speed tires designed specially for the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 (for vmax. > 350 km/h), sizes 265-680 ZR500A (front) and 365-710 R540A (rear), incorporate a further innovative safety feature in the form of the PAX System fitted to the wheels and tires, ensuring safe handling even after sudden pressure loss. Another Bugatti Veyron 16.4 component with a safety element is the rear spoiler. As well as providing the necessary downforce during high-speed travel, it acts as a kind of 'parachute brake' during emergency braking. Once precisely-defined deceleration forces are registered the spoiler tilts and the additional air resistance this generates reduces the braking distance to that of a lorry.

The Art of the Machine

The W16 alloy engine developed by Bugatti for the Veyron 16.4 will have a special and absolutely unique place in the history of sports car construction. Its design employs the space-saving VR principle with two particularly slender eight-cylinder blocks arranged at a 90° angle to each other.

1001 horsepower equip the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 with a level of acceleration unheard of in the sports car segment, propelling it from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.5 seconds and past the 200 mph mark in a mere 24 seconds. Thanks to its 923 lb-ft, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4's enormous propulsive power is not exhausted until it reaches 252.3 mph (406 km/h): the maximum speed for which chassis and drive train have been designed. Any further performance escalation is limited by current design and construction.

Also unique is the power transmission via an innovative directshift gearbox. Without any interruption in the power flow, the sequential seven-speed gearbox transmits the engine's power to the wheels via permanent four-wheel drive. Put simply, this means uninterrupted acceleration from a standing start to maximum speed: a feeling previously known only to jet pilots.

Exclusive, Classical, Functional

Both exclusive and highly functional, the interior of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 will transport you to a world of your own. Superb leather, also two-tone if desired, quality metallic trim and beautifully designed and ergonomically laid-out controls characterize the Veyron cockpit.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 instruments, with a large central rev counter surrounded by four smaller additional instruments also conjures up memories of the marque's legendary motor sport past. The deliberate avoidance of superfluous instruments and modern extras are an unmistakable statement of the car's uncompromising sportiness.

Unchanged on the series version of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is the classical two-tone paintwork. The designers have selected five separate color combinations for the car: Each of the combinations features the bonnet, roof and rear in the darker of the two colors, with the sides and front wheel arches in the lighter color.
